I was born in Ohio but grew up in the San Fernando Valley in California. I acquired my "scholastic" art education with a BFA in Art from UC Santa Barbara (as well as additional studies at Long Beach State University and UCLA), but my "hands on" art education has been by doing commercial as well as commissioned work. I created a Display Art business in Hollywood, CA building large specialty displays for the record industry featuring hand painted reproductions of album covers that were installed in major record stores. Through these connections I was commissioned to do paintings for people within the entertainment industry and have also done work for corporate executives.
I sold the business and moved to Palm Desert, CA where I was hired as the lead artist for an outdoor display company painting gigantic billboards (before they became digitally produced). Still developing my own style, all this "realism" helped me focus more on detail and color. Like many artists, my travels through Europe, Mexico, Central, and South America and more recently the Caribbean, have been the inspiration for many of my paintings. I've always been drawn to anything tropical which is why Gauguin is my favorite artist. His daring use of color and outlining has had a tremendous influence on my work.
STYLES
Although I have spent many years painting in a photorealistic manner for employment and portraiture work,
today my style is figurative and loosely impressionistic. I use a soft outlining technique against bright and vivid color and I sometimes combine realism with a graphic accent.
